Based on a musical by Boris Alexandrov and a story by Leonid Yukhvid, the action takes place during the Civil War in Ukraine. A peaceful small village inhabited mostly by old people and children is raided regularly by the White Army diverging gangs. The Red Army commander called Nazar disguises himself as a White Army officer and arrives to the village just in time to attend a wedding of his own daughter Yarinka, who is forced to marry the head of a gang.
